Composition Audition Requirements

There is no audition, interview or exam requirement for composition applicants (except at the DMA level, as noted below). Your portfolio of submitted scores will be evaluated for admission consideration.

Submit three or four scores of original compositions postmarked by December 1. Each of the submitted scores should be a bound photocopy of the original manuscript. If available, please include a CD or cassette recording of the submitted compositions. Show, through transcripts or other supporting documents, proof of theoretical study.

DMA applicants should submit at least three scores and recordings of recent works. It is helpful if works are chosen to demonstrate a variety of ensembles and forms, including at least one larger work. After a preliminary review of the submitted scores, selected applicants will be invited to take the DMA entrance exams at NEC. There is no interview or audition required for DMA applicants invited to the exams. Applicants who are not selected to take the exams will be notified that they have not been accepted for study.

Scores and recordings submitted by Composition applicants will be returned if accompanied by appropriate return packaging and postage. Applicants wishing to pick up scores in person can make arrangements to do so by calling the Office of Admission. Scores are available for return between July 1 and September 30 only. NEC will not be responsible for scores remaining in the Office of Admission after October 1.
