Conducting

General Requirements

Applicants must submit a pre-screening DVD or VHS videotape (NTSC format, standard in the U.S.) showing the applicant conducting a live ensemble.

  • The video should show the applicant’s recent work and the applicant should be clearly visible.
  • Please label the DVD or videotape with the applicant’s name, the ensemble conducted, the date recorded, and the repertoire performed.
  • Please mark timings (VHS) and/or chapters (DVD).

Orchestral

Pre-screening video must be postmarked on or before December 31, 2008. The video should be between 15 and 30 minutes in length and include at least three works (or excerpts of works) in contrasting styles.

  • At least one work should be from the standard repertoire.
  • At least one work should show a rehearsal and performance of the same work with the same ensemble.

Selected applicants will be invited to NEC for an examination and interview with Hugh Wolff, and will audition in front of a live orchestra. Repertoire for this audition will be determined at least one month prior.

Choral, Wind Ensemble

Pre-screening video must be postmarked on or before December 1, 2008. The video should be between 15 and 20 minutes in length and should include both rehearsal and performance footage in which the applicant is visible. All of the rehearsal footage should show a frontal view of the applicant; performance footage should also include a frontal view of the applicant.

After review, selected applicants will be invited to NEC for an examination and interview with faculty, and will audition in front of a live ensemble.

Audition Dates

Applicants to the Conducting major are scheduled by the Office of Admission for auditions, following consultation with the relevant faculty members.
