Woodwinds Audition Requirements

Flute | Oboe | Clarinet | Saxophone | Bassoon

Flute

Applicants to the Flute Performance program must submit a preliminary audition CD. After review, qualified applicants will be invited to present an in-person audition. Please refer to the Tape Guidelines section of the application for more information.

Flute preliminary audition CDs (all programs except AD):
1. Mozart – Exposition of 1st and 2nd movements of the Concerto in G or D major
2. Contrasting piece of the candidate’s choice
3. Orchestral Excerpts:
A. Beethoven Leonore Overture No. 3 – measures 328-360
B. Brahms Symphony No. 4, last movement – measures 93-105
C. Mendelssohn Scherzo from Midsummer Nights Dream – 2 measures before P to the end

In-person Auditions for Undergraduate Applicants:
1. One Etude and Major and Minor scales
2. Mozart Concerto in G or D major – movements 1 and 2.
3.Major contemporary work (complete sonata, concerto, or substantial work such as Dutilleux Sonatine, Jolivet Chant de Linos, Martin Ballade, or Sancan Sonatine)
4. Three Orchestral Excerpts displaying a variety of styles (from Jeanne Baxtresser Book of Orchestral Excerpts)

In-person Auditions for Graduate Applicants:
1. Any sonata by J.S. Bach
2. Mozart Concerto – complete
3. Major contemporary work (complete sonata, concerto, or substantial work such as Dutilleux Sonatine, Jolivet Chant de Linos, Martin Ballade, or Sancan Sonatine)
4. Five Orchestral Excerpts displaying a variety of styles (from Jeanne Baxtresser Book of Orchestral Excerpts)

Oboe

Undergraduate:

  1. One slow Ferling etude, and either a fast Ferling etude or a Barrett Grand Study.
  2. One slow and one fast movement from either a Baroque or Classical concerto - applicant's choice for additional repertoire.
  3. Two contrasting orchestral excerpts.

Graduate:

  1. One slow Ferling etude, and either a fast Ferling etude or a Barrett Grand Study.
  2. One slow and one fast movment from either a Baroque or Classical concerto - applicant's choice for additonal repertoire.
  3. Four excerpts chosen from the following:

    A. any Bach Cantanta
    B. Beethoven Symphony No.3
    C. Brahms Symphony No.1
    D. Debussy La Mer
    E. Ravel Le Tombeau de Couperin
    F. Rossini La Scala di Seta
    G. Schumann Symphony No. 3
    H. Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4

Clarinet

Undergraduate: Prepare two etudes, one from each group, from Rose 32 Etudes (Carl Fischer edition): (1, 11, 13, 19, 21, or 31) and (10, 16, 20, or 24.). Please also prepare the following additional requirements:

I. One of the following solos (memorization is encouraged, but not required):

  • Mozart Concerto, K. 622 (movements 1 and 2 or 2 and 3)
  • Weber Concerto No. 1 (movements 1 and 2 or 2 and 3)
  • Weber Concerto No. 2 (movements 1 and 2 or 2 and 3)
  • Debussy First Rhapsody (complete)

II.A 20th-century unaccompanied solo, such as:

  • Malcolm Arnold Fantasy for Clarinet (complete)
  • Leslie Bassett Soliloquies (choose a two-movement combination of 1 and 2, 1 and 4, 3 and 2, or 3 and 4)
  • Donald Martino A Set for Clarinet (first movement)
  • Olivier Messiaen Abyss of the Birds (complete)
  • Miklos Rozsa Sonatina op. 27 (first movement)
  • William O. Smith Five Pieces (choose between 1st, 3rd, or 5th piece plus 4th piece)
  • Igor Stravinsky Three Pieces (complete)
  • Heinrich Sutermeister Capriccio (complete)

III.All three of the following orchestral selections:

  • Beethoven Symphony No. 6
    first movement: two bars before K until end of solo (mm 474 to end of solo)
    second movement: one bar before D through two bars before E (mm 68 through 77)
  • Mendelssohn A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Scherzo)
    beginning to bar 48
    measures 145 -157
  • Rimsky-Korsakov Capriccio Espagnol
    first movement: from A to B; and from C to the 15th bar after C

Graduate: Prepare two etudes, one from each group, from Rose 32 Etudes (Carl Fischer edition): (1, 11, 13, 19, 21, or 31) and (10, 16, 20, or 24.). Please also prepare the following additional requirements:

I.One of the following solos in its entirety (memorization is encouraged, but not required):

Saxophone

Undergraduate: Be prepared to play two of the following, or comparable works. At least one movement of one work should be performed from memory (if possible):

  • Creston Sonata op. 19 (pub. Shawnee), Desenclos Prelude, Cadence et Finale (pub. Leduc), Glazounov Concerto (pub. Leduc), Ibert Concertino da Camera (pub. Leduc), Villa-Lobos Fantasia (pub. Peer-Southern)

Graduate: Be prepared to play two pieces, one of which should be performed from memory (if possible):

  1. Ibert Concertino da Camera (pub. Leduc)
  2. Choose one of the following (or a comparable work): Dahl Concerto (pub. European American Music), Denisov Sonata (pub. Leduc), Harbison Sonata "San Antonio" (pub. Schirmer-AMP)

In addition, be prepared to play three orchestral excerpts from The Orchestral Saxophonist, vol. 1 (pub. Roncorp). Suggested excerpts:

  • Mussorgsky-Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition
  • Prokofiev Lieutenant Kije
  • Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances

Bassoon

Undergraduate:

  1. Two contrasting movements from a Baroque or Classical sonata or concerto.
  2. Two contrasting movements from a contemporary sonata, concerto, or unaccompanied piece (or a one-movement work in its entirety).
  3. Two orchestral excerpts of your choice.

Graduate:

  1. Two contrasting movements from a Baroque or Classical sonata or concerto.
  2. Two contrasting movements from a Classical or Romantic sonata or concerto.
  3. Two contrasting movements from a contemporary sonata, concerto, or unaccompanied piece (or a one-movement work in its entirety).
  4. Four orchestral excerpts of your choice.
