Professional Piano Trio Training Program

NEC's Professional Piano Trio Training Program is a specialized course of study in the art of chamber music under the direction of Vivian Hornik Weilerstein. Established in 2001, the program offers intensive training and coaching for exceptional piano trios that show the talent and commitment necessary to pursue a concert career.

  • Full-time residency typically lasting two years
  • Full tuition scholarship and small living stipend for each student
  • Three hours of ensemble coaching per week (includes regular coaching by Vivan Hornik Weilerstein along with coaching from a strings faculty member)
  • Weekly individual studio instruction from NEC strings and piano faculty
  • Daily group rehearsals
  • Yearly recital in our world-renowned Jordan Hall
  • Off-campus performances in venues such as the Kennedy Center, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and the Rhinebeck Chamber Music Society.
  • Masterclasses and community outreach performances.
  • NEC's professional certificate in the art of piano trio playing, plus NEC degree or diploma
  • Training in all aspects of musicianship and career development

The Professional Piano Trio Training Program is intended for existing piano trios that are selected by audition. It is not open to other individuals or groups. Applications are accepted every two years. One trio is selected for each two-year residency.

Pianist Vivian Hornik Weilerstein has performed as a soloist and chamber music throughout the world. She is a member of NEC's highly acclaimed trio-in-residence, The Weilerstein Trio. For more information, please visit her NEC faculty biography.
