NEC Receives $250K Gift to Fund Blueprint for Campus Expansion
New England Conservatory has received a $250 thousand gift from Trustee Thomas W. Blumenthal and his wife, Lisa Blumenthal, that will support finalizing a blueprint for the planned expansion and updating of NEC’s aging physical plant with new residential, rehearsal, library and community space.
“We are tremendously grateful to Tom and Lisa for their generous gift,” said David Scudder, Chair of the NEC Gift of Music Campaign. “This will be the most extensive expansion and renovation of the school in the Conservatory’s history, and the planning alone requires a considerable investment.”
This spring, NEC’s Institutional Master Planning (IMP) Committee, headed by Trustee Stephen Friedlaender, presented a preliminary plan to the Board of Trustees for approval. Among other highlights, the plan calls for more than doubling the current library space and erecting a new 300-bed dormitory. “We have developed a phased approach for NEC's campus expansion and now, with the Blumenthals’ gift, we are in position to begin making this exciting vision a reality,” said Friedlaender.
As a next step, NEC hopes to hire an architecture firm over the coming year to begin finalizing a blueprint for the project.
