Institutes | College/Adult Courses | For Young Performers | General Information NEC Summer School: Institutes and IntensivesThe Thomas A. Dorsey Summer Gospel Institute The NEC Gospel Music Institute began in 1999 as an offshoot of the highly successful annual Thomas A. Dorsey Gospel Jubilee, at NEC's Jordan Hall. The Institute is predicated on a need to take a detailed look into the roots, theory and practice of Gospel music, beyond performance. It now stands as a significant, open-ended, benchmark setting for the study of spirituals, art songs and shape-note singing, as well as gospel. The Institute features a rich mixture of hands-on, seminar-style classroom workshop sessions, student and faculty evening performances, topical luncheons, colloquia, a symposium, and a closing event featuring a highly respected vocal ensemble. Each classroom workshop session is led by a distinguished teacher and performer. All faculty of the Gospel Music Institute are recipients of either the prestigious NEC Thomas A. Dorsey Gospel Music Award or the equally notable NEC Anna Bobbit Gardner/Coretta Scott King Lifetime Achievement Award. Workshops: Gospel Institute Workshops cover a wide range of topics, including: Basic Music theory (Dennis L. Slaughter), Gospel Keyboard Accompaniment (Jonathan Singleton), Conducting and Directing Gospel Choirs (Donnell L. Patterson), Gospel Song Writing (HerbertS. Jones); NEC Gospel Youth Choir Rehearsal (Evelyn Lee Jones and Hobert S.Yates), and Vocal Technique (Patricia Dance, James A.Early, and Renese E. King).
