Richard Danielpour

Composition

Once mentored by the legendary Leonard Bernstein, Richard Danielpour continues to live a composer's dream. Having secured an exclusive contract to record his works with Sony Classical, he has written for the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra. Such artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Jessye Norman, Christopher O'Riley '81 A.D., and the Emerson String Quartet have performed his music. His works have also been featured in performances by the New York City and Pacific Northwest ballet companies. His opera Margaret Garner had a three-city premiere in 2005/2006 as a co-commission from Michigan Opera Theatre, Cincinnati Opera, and Opera Company of Philadelphia. Based on a slave narrative, the libretto is by Toni Morrison; NEC alumna Denyce Graves '88 DP created the title role.
