David Gockley was a relative newcomer to the field when he was hired as General Director of the Houston Grand Opera in 1970. He has since transformed the company, founding its Opera Studio for Young Artists, overseeing the construction of a new opera house, introducing new repertoire and stagings, and raising the overall profile and endowment of the institution.After almost four decades in Houston, Gockley was named General Director of the San Francisco Opera, beginning January 2006.
