Pianist Craig Smith (1947-2007) was founder and artistic director of Emmanuel Music, a Boston based group of singers and instrumentalists based at Boston’s Emmanuel Church. The ensemble performs a range of chamber and large-scale works, both sacred and secular, but its core mission is the live performance of a Bach Cantata every week as part of the Sunday Emmanuel Church services. Smith also collaborated with stage director Peter Sellars in staging opera productions at companies in the United States and abroad. In the 1990s, Smith taught music history and piano literature at NEC.
