Vocal PerformanceBest known for her performances of Mozart, Eleanor Steber was the Metropolitan Opera’s first lady for more than twenty years, singing the company’s first Arabella and Marie (Wozzeck). She also created the title role of Samuel Barber’s Vanessa and commissioned that composer’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915. After retiring from the Met, she became chair of the voice department at the Cleveland Institute of Music and also taught at Juilliard and NEC. |
