Writing Sample
Applicants to both undergraduate and graduate programs must submit a sample of expository writing. The submission should be 300500 words in length and may be either a research paper or written example demonstrating original thought.
There is no required topic or essay question.
Several departments/programs also have additional or more specific requirements:
- Contemporary Improvisation in addition
to the writing sample requirement, applicants must submit a second essay explaining the reasons for choosing this major, and a short statement describing the influences on and motivations for their personal style
- DMA applicants should include a statement of purpose
in addition to the writing sample requirement (please refer to application details for Doctoral applicants)
- Undergraduate transfer applicants in addition to the writing sample requirement, applicants must submit a statement outlining their reasons for transfer from their present institution to NEC
