In 2007 Aaron Mendez ’94 completed his score for the documentary Tangier Treehouse. In the recording he plays bass, and NEC alumni Jeff Hudgins ’94 M.M. and Mieko Take ’95 perform on saxophones and clarinet, respectively. The film is being picked up by a number of public TV stations and is starting rounds of festivals, both domestic and international. Aaron says that he would like to dedicate his work on the film to NEC faculty member Bob Labaree, whose music history courses were a major inspiration for Aaron’s work on this soundtrack. Another recent project of his, Fire Under the Snow, for which he was a producer and composer, debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. Aaron and Mieko are married and live in Brooklyn, N.Y. with their 3 year old daughter. 8/20/08 |

Violinist John Maida ’94 M.M. lives in Rome, Italy, where he is a member of the multiethnic ensemble Orchestra Di Piazza Vittorio. He is also composing and is working towards becoming a film scoring composer. 1/13/08 |

In 2007 Barbara Kimber-Harrington ’94, received her Master of Arts in Music Education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She now teaches elementary music at Oak Mountain Intermediate School in Birmingham. 1/13/08 |

Luciana Souza ’94 M.M. released a new CD, The New Bossa Nova, which includes alumni Matt Moran ’95 M.M. and Antonio Sanchez. The CD consists chiefly of pop tunes performed in the bossa nova style, and features a duet with James Taylor. This project is Luciana’s first collaboration with her husband, producer Larry Klein. Luciana currently lives in Venice, Calif. 11/20/07 |

Randall Hall ’94 M.M. has released his debut solo CD, Neither Proud Nor Ashamed, on Innova (660). The disc features experimental music for saxophone and electronics by Luciano Berio, Christian Lauba, Kevin Ernste, Nicolas Scherzinger, Jonathan Kirk, and Randall Hall. 7/3/07 |

Sten Hostfalt ’94 G.D., ’95 M.M. released a solo recording 29 Pieces for Microtonal Guitar in 2003, which ranked unusually high on Amazon.com for an independently released creative new music/improvised album. He has been enjoying critical acclaim after a series of NYC and East Coast solo concerts as well as a microtonal clinic at Berklee College of Music. 7/3/07 |

In 2007, jazz vocalist Lisa Thorson ’94 M.M. was promoted to full professorship at Berklee College of Music. She has been performing in her multimedia sensory jazz project “JazzArtSigns,” which combines music, painting, sign language, and captions to create a universally accessible performance. She was also involved in Filmprov, where she was part of an ensemble that included pianist Tim Ray ’86 M.M. The ensemble improvised to films by Kate Matson. Lisa, who suffered a spinal chord injury at the age of 21, was inducted into the Spinal Chord Injury Hall of Fame in 2006. A composition of hers, Mother Daughter Sister Friend: A Call from Ocean to Ocean, appears on the recently released album, We Are All Connected: Berklee College of Music Reaches Out to the Women of Darfur. 7/3/07 |

Brian Gelfand ’94 was Artist-in-Residence at the Makor Program in New York City in the fall of 2005. Some of his projects at Makor included writing music for video productions and dramatic pieces. 7/3/07 |

Rhoda Bernard ’94 was recently elected Vice President (President-Elect) of the Board of Young Audiences of Massachusetts. She is the Chair of Music Education at Boston Conservatory, where she teaches in a Master’s Degree program that trains people to be K-12 music teachers. Rhoda continues to regularly sing Jewish music in Yiddish and Hebrew in concerts and at private parties throughout the Northeast. 7/3/07 |
