About the MIE Concentration

The Music-in-Education Concentration is a program offered to all undergraduate and graduate students. It provides an entry point for students into the field of education while they pursue their degree requirements in any major, by offering introductory courses as well as teaching guided internships. Course work completed in the MIE Concentration may lead to advanced Teacher Certification awarded by the Massachusetts Department of Education.

The mission of the Center Music-In-Education Concentration Program is to encourage NEC students to pursue pedagogy, education, guided internships, and teaching to facilitate subsequent career opportunities with arts organizations, schools, and institutions of higher education.

The CMIE Concentration Program Goals are:

  • To develop NEC students’ awareness of their potential future roles as musician/educators.
  • To provide flexible and individualized entry points into the field of education for NEC students for both traditional and non-traditional roles.
  • To support the development of personal pre-professional portfolios that would aid CMIE Concentration students in their professional careers.

Student Eligibity: Open to All!

The MIE Concentration Program is open to all students at NEC, regardless of major or degree program. The MIE Concentration itself isn't a major—there is no separate applicaton proccess; nor do students have to switch programs or degrees to participate. Also, no prior teaching experience is necessary.

How The Concentration Works

Students are eligible to receive a Music-In-Education Concentration after successful completion of (a minimum of) 4 MIE courses and 2 Guided Internships. Many courses are cross-listed ino ther departments and can count for MIE credit. Please note: MIE Courses are listed as Graduate Level courses, but are open to all undergraduates.

MIE Courses can be taken for 0 or 2 credits. Only one course must be taken for 2 credits (and it must be an MIE Core Course—see Program Coordinator Randy Wong for details). The remaining MIE courses can be taken for 0 credits. Completion of MIE Courses and Guided Internships, regardless of whether or not they were taken for credit, get listed on student transcripts; the Concentration is listed on the student's diploma after his/her major and degree.

What are Guided Internships?

Guided Internships are open-ended independent projects that serve as entry points to teaching and learning, and help MIE students gain and hone essential entrepreneurial skills via our ‘digital portfolio’ assessment system.

Examples of Guided Internships undertaken in the past include:

  • Private lesson teaching
  • Classroom teaching experience
  • Study of national initiatives in the connections between music and literacy
  • Community-building amongst teaching artists and schools
  • Ensemble coaching
  • Investigation and survey of existing music programs
  • Evaluation of symphony orchestra education programs (local and national)
  • Design-Your-Own Music Program/Workshop
  • Design-Your-Own research project

Completed Guided Internships are rewarded by listing on students’ academic transcripts, and count towards the MIE Concentration (a minimum of 2 Guided Internships are needed). Internships must be approved by the CMIE Program Coordinator prior to start of the internship; a written proposal is required. See page 5 of this document for more information. Certain Guided Internships may be eligible for a CMIE Fellowship Award (typically $500).

Essential Features of CMIE Guided Internships

The internship must be proposed in a way that is mutually beneficial to all parties involved:

  • to the school, community organization, or community hosting the internship;
  • to the MIE course concurrent to the internship (or to coursework you are completing for your Concentration); and last but not least,
  • to YOUR goals, desires, and needs as an emerging Artist-Teacher-Scholar.

As a Guided Intern, you will become a part of a community of other musician-teachers. In some cases, the school or community center that you intern in will not have had a music program before. In other cases, you may be working on a team with other NEC Guided Interns. However in all cases, you will be guided and mentored throughout your internship. Not only by MIE faculty at NEC, but also by teachers and/or administrators at the host schools/community centers that you will be interning at.

Responsibility towards Professionalism and Community Building

CMIE Guided Interns are charged with responsibilities whose scopes are, by definition, broader than the immediate Conservatory community. When working with public schools, community service organizations, professional performing arts organizations, and other independent teaching artists or mentors, we ask that you remember that you are a guest at that respective institution, and that your guided internship is an opportunity for community building. As a Guided Intern, you are not only serving as an advocate for why music should be an essential part of every student’s curriculum, but also as an ambassador of good will and collegiality from NEC. Should problems arise, for any reason, please contact Randy Wong for confidential advising.
