Bernard Barbeau (1920–2002)

Himself an NEC alumnus (1948, 1950 M.M.) with his studies under William L. Whitney interrupted by service in WWII, Bernard Barbeau remained a member of the NEC family as a faculty member from 1952 to 1988. His students included baritones James Maddalena ’76 and Christòpheren Nomura ’90 TU, ’90 M.M., ’94 A.D., tenor Gary Imhoff ’72, and soprano Cheryl Cobb ’74 M.M. His own performance career included the Boston premiere of Copland’s The Second Hurricane, conducted by Leonard Bernstein in Jordan Hall, appearances with the Boston Pops, and touring with the Cavaliers male quartet. Barbeau also sang at Temple Ohabei Shalom in Brookline and was a member of the King’s Chapel choir in Boston. He was married to a fellow alum, the former Louise Levasseur ’53.
