Director of Piano Services

Reports To:  Director of Performance Services
Status: Exempt

SUMMARY:

  • Responsible for repairs and upgrading of concert hall pianos.
  • Oversee coordination and management of piano maintenance, repairs and improvements.
  • Supervise Piano department staff in the rebuilding of the piano actions and keyboards.
  • Supervise work of contract technicians which includes major structural repairs and refinishing of pianos.
  • Responsible for administrative duties including: research, price order and maintain all piano equipment, exercising discretion and independent judgment; prepare, manage and balance Piano Department budget; receive requests for piano services, scheduling and assigning the work as needed and answering requests for information, responding to emails, ordering office supplies, etc.
  • Advise, consult and provide piano support to the New England Conservatory community by preparing concert hall and practice room pianos for repairs and upgrades; consult with faculty and students on piano needs.
  • Work cooperatively with New England Conservatory faculty and staff to develop, maintain and implement short-term and long-term strategies for maintaining and building the piano inventory at a level commensurate with the Conservatory's programs.
  • Supervise department staff and contract technicians including: hiring and training piano staff on various piano repair and maintenance techniques; evaluating staff on skills and abilities; scheduling and disciplining piano staff and contract technicians.
  • Perform evening and weekend concert service.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certificate/diploma in Piano Technology or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years experience in piano voicing, regulation, tuning and repair required.
  • Member of the Piano Technicians Guild with Registered Piano Technician status preferred.
  • Extensive experience in preparing pianos for concerts and recordings. Must have a thorough understanding of piano technology concepts and methods.
  • Ability to operate specialized piano repair tools, small power tools and equipment such as a drill press, table saw and band saw.
  • A minimum of 3 years of supervisory and management experience is required, preferably in a demanding academic setting.
  • Experience developing proposals and presentations; ability to collaborate and recommend options.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others to plan and achieve strategic goals.
  • Superb interpersonal skills as well as the ability to relate sensitively to internal and external colleagues and constituents are essential.
  • Ability to delegate work assignments, set expectations and monitor assigned activities to achieve timely results.
  • Must have strong and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities is necessary.
