Music for parties usually serves as a background. Jazz and classical music are equally popular.

Budget, taste, and size of audience determine instrumentation. Since the setting is often smaller than more formal private functions (such wedding receptions), soloists, duos and trios generally work well. Cocktail pianists are always a good choice for this situation due to their flexibility.

For Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, classical music, jazz, and klezmer are used equally. For background music at a quiet Bar/Bat Mitzvah reception, classical music would probably be the choice; for a livelier event, jazz or klezmer would be more suited. Most klezmer groups can play a combination of jazz and klezmer music.
