NEC Opera Season 2008/2009

Opera studies at NEC | Past productions

NEC Opera double bill:
Menotti's The Medium and
Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti

February 20, 21 at 8pm; February 22, 3pm
Cutler Majestic Theatre, 219 Tremont Street, Boston

NEC's opera valentine to Boston is a sampler of American miniatures where you'll find that there's never a dull moment.

Leonard Bernstein's one-act opera Trouble in Tahiti is an intimate, jazzy reflection on that little white house in suburbia where things are not quite what they seem. It's paired with Gian Carlo Menotti's The Medium, a hair-raising ghost story by one of America's most theatrical composers.

This production brings director Michael Ehrman back to Boston, where his work has previously been seen at Boston Lyric Opera in their 1989 production of Tosca. The music comes from the instruments and voices of NEC's orchestra and cast of talented students. John Greer, chair of NEC's Opera Studies program, conducts. Performed in English, with supertitles.

$20/$16 students, seniors. Free with NEC i.d. WGBH members, 2-for-1 with i.d. Tickets available through www.telecharge.com or at the Cutler Majestic Theatre Box Office, 219 Tremont Street, Boston, Mon-Sat, 10am–6pm / 800-233-3123.

Michael Ehrman's participation is made possible by the Mattina R. Proctor Visiting Artist Fund.

Side by Side by Sondheim:
NEC Opera Department revue

From “Beautiful Girls” to “A Boy Like That,” the fresh young voices of NEC’s opera students take on the frisky lyrics and frothy music of America’s living legend of Broadway song. The 31 songs come from a dozen different shows and films, weighted heavily towards such acknowledged masterpieces as A Little Night Music, Company, and Follies. Also included: songs dropped from shows that have taken on a second performance life through inclusion in this revue. NEC opera studies chair John Greer conducts; Martha Collins, of Sarasota Opera, directs.
