Community Partnerships

In our effort to promote ongoing relationships within the Boston community, NEC has developed many partnerships with civic, social service and arts organizations. In the majority of these places, NEC students perform multiple programs throughout the year in order to develop long–term relationships. Our community partners range from nursing homes, homeless shelters and libraries to Boston Public Schools, YMCA Youth programs and community centers in inner city neighborhoods. Many of our partnering organizations are located in the vicinity of NEC, allowing for a true "good neighbor" relationship to develop.

Senior Centers and Nursing Homes
NEC has developed partnerships with numerous senior residential and social facilities throughout the greater Boston metropolitan area including Susan S. Bailis Assisted Living, Chestnut Hill Benevolent Society, North Hill Retirement, Peterborough Senior Center, Cadbury Commons Assisted Living, and Hebrew Rehabilitation, among others. Individual musicians and student ensembles perform monthly at these locations.

Hospitals
Currently, NEC students perform in local area hospitals including Boston Children’s Hospital, St. Elizabeth’s Medical, New England Baptist and Tewksbury Hospital. Students also perform in Alzheimer’s units of area nursing homes, rehabilitative care units and in medical settings for specialized populations, such as Greater Boston Aid to the Blind.

Schools

Boston Area Schools
In-school performances and presentations are an important part of the Community Performances and Partnerships program. NEC students regularly perform and work as teaching artists in Boston area schools including the Conservatory Lab Charter School, Orchard Gardens K-8, Quincy Elementary, Mother Caroline Academy, and Hennigan Elementary, among others. NEC has also developed a partnership with after-school programs administrated by Boston YMCA at three sites in neighborhoods surrounding NEC. NEC students visit Mission Hill Elementary, Hurley Elementary and the Central YMCA weekly to teach young children about their instruments and explore various aspects of music.

Greater Boston Area Schools
NEC students are involved in short-term school residencies in Massachusetts school districts outside of Boston including Rockport, Winthrop, Cape Cod and the islands.

NEC Touring Children’s Opera
Every year, graduate students from NEC’s Opera Department perform a one-hour opera specifically chosen for 3rd-5th grade children in four Boston elementary schools. Prior to the performance, NEC students in the program visit the schools and prepare children for the program by giving them a “behind-the-scenes" look at the world of opera.

Community Organizations

NEC has partnered on special projects with other arts and social organizations including United South End Settlement House, Boston Symphony, Young Audiences of Massachusetts, Boston YMCA and Pine Street Inn, among others.

Community Concert Series

NEC students are featured performers in concert series throughout Boston including programs at the Old South Meeting House, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston Athenaeum, Coolidge Corner Theatre, St. Andrew’s Performing Arts Series, Mary Baker Eddy Library, Gore Place, and the John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse.
