Conservatory Lab Charter School

In fall 1999, the Conservatory Lab Charter School opened in Boston for students in kindergarten through second grade. Created and launched by a team of educators, researchers, music curriculum writers, and administrators from NEC and other institutions, the mission of CLCS is to create an innovative model curriculum that aims to help all students reach high levels of academic performance through:

  • an interdisciplinary curriculum that infuses musical processes and shared fundamental concepts into all academic subjects
  • weekly violin lessons for grades 1-5
  • daily music instruction that captures each child's creativity and natural love of music.

Boston children are admitted to the school by lottery, no audition required. As the initial group of students advanced to the next grade at the end of each school year, the school has eventually grown up to its current status as a full K-6 elementary school.

Throughout the school's existence, it has been supported by NEC through:

  • NEC's Learning Through Music curriculum model
  • funded access to NEC performances and classes
  • the expertise of NEC's leadership, faculty, and students.
