All pre-college students are invited to audition for participation in one or more of the New England Conservatory’s (NEC) Preparatory School
musical ensembles. These ensembles are part of the complete musical curriculum of the NEC Preparatory School, but may be taken separately. For a complete course
listing, please request a catalog from 617-585-1130 or visit www.newenglandconservatory. edu. Large ensembles rehearse once a week for 30 weeks, September through
early June, and perform several concerts throughout the year. Repertoire is chosen from a variety of styles and is suited to the proficiency level of the participants.
Emphasis is on the highest quality of performance and the development of fine ensemble technique. In recent years, touring (both national and international) has
become an integral part of the program for the more advanced ensembles.
Ensemble Tours
A unique musical and cultural experience is available to those students participating in touring ensembles. Past tours have taken students to
South America, the Far East, Great Britain, Europe, Russia, Cuba and Venezuela. Some ensembles have hosted visiting student groups and toured in the Greater Boston
area as well. In addition to regular season concert recordings, some ensembles have issued professional recordings of live tour performances. The Youth Philharmonic
Orchestra has produced an award-winning video of their tour to Chile and Argentina, which has aired nationwide.
Student Soloists
A concerto competition, open to all ages and instruments, is held every year in November. Several prizes are awarded in each orchestral category,
and the winner performs with one of the orchestras (YRO, YS or YPO). Students are selected to participate by faculty recommendation. The student must have been
taking full-time private lessons through the NEC Preparatory School for at least one academic year prior to the competition. Conductors may select additional competition
prize winners or orchestra members to perform as soloists.
Fall Placements
September 10 & 11, 2005 Once a student has been accepted into an instrumental ensemble a seating placement audition must be taken. During
this weekend we will also hold placements for studio teachers, chamber music ensembles and classes as well as entrance auditions for the Scholarship Brass Quintet.
Please contact the Preparatory School at 617-585-1130 beginning August 9, 2005 for further information and to sign up for fall auditions.
