Children’s Choruses

Jean Meltaus, Director

There are four choruses offered in this integrated program, which is designed to supplement the early instrumental studies and the theory program, as well as teach early to advanced choral technique. The ages listed are guidelines. Each child will have an individual meeting with the director for appropriate placement in the program. Placement auditions are scheduled in May and September.

Children’s Chorus
Open to singers, ages 10–14, by audition. An advanced ensemble which collaborates with musical ensembles throughout the Boston area. Qualified students may also be recommended for the Middle School Chorus or the Chamber Chorus. Rehearsals—Saturday, 10:00–11:55 a.m.

Chamber Chorus
Open to singers, ages 12-16, who qualify for Children’s Chorus. An advanced choral ensemble which sings treble repertoire in 4 parts.
Rehearsals—Saturday, 3:00–4:30 p.m.

Preparatory Chorus
Open to singers, ages 8–9, with participation for 1–2 years. Geared toward teaching fundamental elements of music. Children work with recognition of pitch and basic musical symbols, exploration of the differences between speaking and singing voices, and concepts of posture, breath control, and diction.
Rehearsals—Saturday, 9:15–10:00 a.m.

Singing Circle
An introduction to singing through folk songs and musical games, this non- performance oriented group is designed to help children ages 7–8 find their “singing voice” and have fun with singing.
Saturday, 8:30–9:15 a.m.
