At the Office of Student Life our goal is to strengthen the NEC community by offering events and services that entice our students out of the practice room and into the lives and hearts of each other.  NEC is a wonderful place bursting with talent, culture and diversity.

We are continually expanding the NEC experience beyond the studio and classroom.  We believe that a great musician is not just a great technician but a well rounded person with cultural understanding, emotional depth, a penchant for fun and an ability to interact with the moment.

We invite NEC students to stop into the office to see what's going on.  We are here to serve the needs of the students.  We respond to needs & ideas and provide support, quality events and general good cheer.

We are also home to the Student Organizations.

We assist students in proposing HIPRONs and starting and maintaining Student Organizations.

Start an Organization: Stop into Student Life to learn about how to start your own student organization.  The benefits of becoming a recognized student organization are great.  Your org could be awarded a budget, use of Student Life resources such as computer, fax, mail, phone, bulletin board space, the use of halls, help with advertising, general guidance to strengthen your org, and more.  Also, think of how great it will look on your resume to be an officer in a student organization!

Propose a HIPRON:  HIPRONS can be proposed by e-mail.  Read the 'HIPRON How To' or stop into the office for assistance with your proposal.

The History

In the fall of ’06 the previous Director of Student Life Catherine Desroche led a forum on “student involvement” where NEC students were invited to give their input.  At this forum the following discoveries were made:

  • A year-long commitment to an organization is too much for many NEC students.

  • Students would want to involve themselves on short term programs and initiatives but would need some general leadership and guidance.

  • There was a consensus that e-mail is the best avenue for communication.  Should limit or eliminate meetings.

  • There was interest in creating an appointed student board that would serve as a voice for the students and on any necessary committees.  This board would replace the student government.

The Response

  • The Student Senate
Created to serve and represent NEC students, members are appointed to the position.  For more information about contacting the Student Senate or becoming a member, go to the Office of Student Life.
  • HIPRON
This is the new process for all NEC students to help make their ideas for NEC a reality. A creation of Colleen Bryant, Director of Student Life, the Student Senate and Tom Handel, Dean of Students, HIPRONs are intended to facilitate the ongoing reinvention of the NEC experience.
    • Do you wish NEC had something?
    • Do you have an idea for an event or a forum?
    • How about a speaker, a conference, a concert, a gathering?
    • Yes? You do? Great! Make a proposal.

All HIPRONs will be considered by the Student Senate, the Dean of Students and Director of Student Life. If approved, NEC's Student Senate can provide money and other resources to help make your HIPRON happen. NEC supports NEC students who work to make things happen at NEC. Make your HIPRON today!

HIPRON how to:

HIPRON PROPOSAL FORMYou must have Microsoft Word to download

What will I include in my HIPRON?

Your HIPRON will be a detailed proposal submitted via e-mail to the Director of Student Life.

You will need to include the following details which are concisely laid out in the HIPRON PROPOSAL FORM:

  • names of all who plan to be involved
  • date, time, location
  • purpose/mission
  • anticipated student involvement
  • logistical planning
  • budget needs
  • guidance, NEC equipment, staff needed

What Kind of HIPRON is likely to be approved?

The key to approval is having a very specific proposal with a clear budget that will impact, involve and/or include many NEC students.

In the past this budget has gone toward the purchase and hanging of mirrors in many of the practice rooms, the foosball table, the gubernatorial debate event, barbeques, a gala ball, sumo-suit wrestling, a hiking trip, a trip to New York City, and swing dancing instruction. Be creative. Be specific. We're looking forward to hearing from you!
