On February 28, NEC students will perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.,
as part of the Conservatory Project. In its second year, this project gathers students from top
music schools for a week of one-hour concerts, before an audience that includes selected advisors and mentors from the cultural
community.
NEC is represented by pianist Katherine Chi (in photo), violin/piano duo Korbinian
Altenberger and Pei-Shan Lee, and the Jupiter String Quartet, who have been setting the competition world on fire during the
past year. |

NEC's upcoming concerts are full of surprises. Musicians and dancers celebrate
a delightful but lesser-known Russian composer. NEC's quartet-in-residence offers all six of Bartok's string quartets in
a single marathon evening. NEC's crack chamber orchestra explores music by local hero Osvaldo Golijov. Romanian composer
George Enesco unites top faculty with the award-winning Jupiter String Quartet. And NEC jazz studies chair Ken Schaphorst
puts on his composer/bandleader hat to direct a concert by our student jazz orchestra. Don't miss these unique musical treats,
and escape the ordinary with a concert at NEC's Jordan Hall!

NEC singers and flutists have made strong showings at recent
competitions. At the New England Regional finals of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions, held in NEC's Jordan Hall on the weekend
of February 5-6, soprano Michelle B. Johnson (in photo), an NEC undergraduate, received the John Moriarty Encouragement Award.
Soprano Maria Alu, a master's student, was also a finalist. Both singers were heard in NEC's December production of Britten's The
Turn of the Screw.
Also on February 6, NEC graduate students took the two top prizes
at the James Pappoutsakis Flute Competition, honoring the former BSO first flutist and NEC faculty member. First prize went
to Heather Zenobia, second prize to Jessica Rosinski. |
