Square named for "unsquare" alumnus |
|
On Saturday, November 6, the City of Cambridge dedicated Marvin E. Gilmore Square, at the corner of
Putnam and Western avenues. This square marks the location of music club The Western Front, and honors its owner, NEC alumnus Marvin Gilmore '51
DP. NEC President Daniel Steiner congratulated Gilmore in a letter, asking "How can the city of Cambridge name a square after the most 'un-square'
man I know? The irony is too great!"
Marvin Gilmore gives back to NEC in many ways: as a member of the Board of Overseers,
as a Board/Student Mentor, and by opening his club every Wednesday night to NEC student jazz ensembles--a tradition that has now been going on
for several years. |

An evening with award-winning
quartet |
|
On Tuesday, November 23, NEC's Jupiter String Quartet will present a Thanksgiving bounty of
music by Mozart, Dvorak, and Shostakovich in NEC's Jordan Hall. This talented young group is in its first year in NEC's Professional String Quartet
Training Program, where it receives mentoring from Cleveland Quartet founding cellist Paul Katz, as well as other faculty coaches.
Competition judges have already heaped honors on this group. Why? "They have something to say," says
Barry Shiffman of the St. Lawrence String Quartet. After a year as an NEC Honors Ensemble, the Jupiter String Quartet took the grand prize at
the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition last May. In September, they won the renowned Banff International String Quartet Competition. |
