New streaming audio: "In the Beginning" |
|
| photo by Tom Fitzsimmons |
This month's Live from NEC streaming audio track turns the clock back to 2001 and outgoing president Daniel Steiner's inauguration concert. Among the varied musical performances on this day, the NEC Chorus set the tone with Aaron Copland's In the Beginning, with text taken from the book of Genesis.
In addition to this audio stream, which will be available through the month of May, NEC offers multiple opportunities to experience choral music in upcoming weeks:
April 24: NEC Concert Choir and Boston Children's Chorus in Jordan Hall
May 20: Choral lecture and open sing at Reunion
May 25: NEC Youth Chorale in Jordan Hall |

New York alumni celebrate Steiner |
|
RSVPs have come in from the class of '49 to the class of 2000, and everything in between. New York alumni are gravitating to the Harvard Club on May 11 for the first edition of a gala event to raise scholarship funds for students from the New York metropolitan area. Outgoing NEC President Daniel Steiner will be honored at this year's event; May 4 has already been proclaimed President Daniel Steiner Day in the City of Boston. |

Bela Fleck plays with NEC Prep students |

At a taping in Ohio earlier this month, NPR classical music radio show From the Top brought NEC Preparatory School musicians together with bluegrass banjo wizard Bela Fleck, who won a Grammy award for his 2001 classical crossover recording with bassist Edgar Meyer, Perpetual Motion.
For "From the Top," violinist Caroline Goulding, a 13-year-old from Cleveland, stepped in to round out an NEC quartet coached by Jonathan Cohler: violinist Mann-Wen Lo, violist Christine Hung, and cellist Tavi Ungerleider. With Fleck (in photo) they performed a special arrangement of "County Clare," one of Fleck's hits from his days with the New Grass Revival. This tune will be the finale of a "From the Top" episode to air nationwide the week of September 4.
"From the Top" returns to its home at NEC's Jordan Hall for a taping May 24. Tickets are now available. |
