The two senior groups in NEC's youth orchestra program will perform in Jordan Hall at the beginning of June.
June 2: NEC's Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, which tours internationally under the baton of Benjamin Zander, performs Mahler's Symphony No. 6. Zander is renowned for his concerts and recordings of Mahler, and this is an opportunity to hear Zander's signature repertoire performed with all the freshness of an accomplished teen orchestra.
June 4: NEC's Youth Symphony, led by Steven Karidoyanes, offers music of Barber and Vaughan Williams. Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1 will showcase Tony Rymer, a 2005 and 2006 Sphinx Competition prize winner and "From the Top" Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award winner. Karidoyanes has just been named music director of Boston's Masterworks Chorale, where he will follow Allen Lannom's half-century at the helm. |

New streaming audio: GuitarFest's Fisk |
|
| photo by Andrew Hurlbut |
This month's "Live from NEC" streaming audio track features Eliot Fisk of the NEC guitar faculty performing a work written for him by Luciano Berio, Sequenza XI.
While Fisk teaches NEC guitar students year-long, he also directs NEC's Boston GuitarFest 2006, a concentrated summer guitar workshop (June 7-11) that spans the art of the classical guitar as well as providing "a mind- and spirit-expanding global musical perspective" that includes everything from sitar to harpsichord.
Also at NEC this summer, guitarist Jonathan "Juanito" Pascual offers an institute on Unlocking the Art of Flamenco (July 9-15). |

Mozart takes a break
|
|
While opportunities to hear Mozart (1756-1791) at NEC during his 250th birthday year are winding down with the approach of summer, please continue to visit NEC's Mozart page over the summer as we begin to post fall concerts that include Mozart in their programs. A slide show of NEC's spring 2006 production of Cosi fan tutte will also remain in place on this page.
June 3: NEC Youth Repertory Orchestra performs Mozart's Impresario Overture |
