On May 21, approximately 275 musicians were unleashed on the world with degrees and diplomas from New England Conservatory, as NEC held its 135th Commencement. That same weekend, around 150 alumni came back to NEC for Reunion activities.
Alumni at Reunion were local or from as far away as Florida and North Carolina. They represented the 50th reunion class of 1956, recent graduates, and everything in between.
The Class of 2006 included an unprecedented total of 13 Doctor of Musical Arts graduates, along with the usual mix of undergraduate and graduate degrees and diplomas.
Speeches and images from Commencement/Reunion 2006 are now posted online. |

Two NEC graduates who received their degrees on May 21 have been awarded Fulbright Fellowships to continue their musical training abroad. NEC Dean of Students Thomas Handel comments that "NEC students do well in the Fulbright competition, but two winners in the same year is remarkable."
Sitarist Joshua Feinberg '06 (in photo), who studied with Peter Row at NEC, will go to Jaipur, India, to study with Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Cellist Danielle Cho '06 M.M., who has graduated with honors after studying with Natasha Brofsky at NEC, will go to Sant Cugat, Spain, to study with Lluis Claret. |

Clarinetist Shirley Brill '07 G.D. and violinist Yura Lee '05 A.D. both won top prizes at international competitions in Germany at the end of May. Both young women performed Mozart concertos as part of the elimination rounds of the competitions, and both get a boost into the recording world along with their prize money: Brill receives recording assistance as an additional prize, and two of Lee's competition performances were recorded for broadcast.

NEC musicians named Schweitzer Fellows |
|
Two NEC viola students have been named Boston Schweitzer Fellows for the 2006/2007 academic year. Doctoral student Itamar Ringel's performance project will expose communities in need to the cross-penetration of different musical traditions. Graduate Diploma student Leah Swann is teaching interdisciplinary music classes in a Boston public school.
The participation of NEC musicians is still a new aspect of the Schweitzer program devoted to community health services, as the students' projects define music itself as contributory to good health. Most of this year's 35 students are from health and human service schools, and typical projects include dissemination of information on oral health, diabetes, and access to medical services. |
