A letter from New England Conservatory Board Chair Jack Vernon dated June 26 announces that President Emeritus Laurence Lesser (in photo) has agreed to act as the Conservatory's chief executive officer for the coming academic year, or until a new President earlier takes office. Lesser's executive responsibilities will be supported by a small Trustee oversight group consisting of Vernon, Norton Sloan, and David Scudder.

Lesser served as acting director of NEC from 1982 to 1983, and as president from 1983 to 1996.

The search for NEC's next president continues, with assistance from the executive search firm Heidrick & Struggles.
