NEC jazz pianists dominate in Paris

New England Conservatory alumni were a formidable presence at the Martial Solal jazz piano competition, held in Paris at the end of September. First prize went to Daniel Szabo '05 M.M. (in photo), with fourth prize and a special mention also going to NEC pianists. The competition, part of a prestigious portfolio of music competitions managed by the City of Paris, carries the name of pianist and European jazz legend Martial Solal, who also presides over the jury.

Also on the European competition circuit, violinist Yura Lee '05 A.D. took second prize at the 51st International Paganini Violin Competition, held in Genoa, Italy.

Eade is "Open" for business with new CD

Vocalist Dominique Eade of NEC's jazz and improvisation faculty joins frequent concert partner, pianist Jed Wilson '05, in her new CD release, Open. The CD includes Eade-penned tracks as well as standards from the jazz songbook and a Leonard Cohen tune.

Are NEC musicians "Thick as a Brick?"

Violinist Megumi Stohs is one of nine current NEC students or recent graduates who have been touring with rock flutist and Jethro Tull band originator Ian Anderson, with music from the 2005 CD Ian Anderson Plays the Orchestral Jethro Tull. Anderson, responsible for such progressive rock classics as "Aqualung" and "Thick as a Brick," revels in presenting his songs in this expanded form, but this is the first time he has actually toured with a stable group of musicians, rather than using pickup orchestras in each venue.

MySpace members can follow the tour from a classically trained violinist's perspective through Stohs's blog on the popular social site.
