NEC Summer School: Institutes and Intensives

Boston GuitarFest 2006

Eliot Fisk, artistic director
Faculty: Mal Barsamian, Eliot Fisk, John Gibbons, Dmitri Goryachev, Adam Holzman, Peter Row, Robert Ward, Christoph Wolff
Wednesday, June 7-Sunday, June 11

Boston GuitarFest 2006, long a dream of artistic director Eliot Fisk, is a concentrated summer guitar workshophighlighting some of the exceptional talent in the Boston area but also attracting aficionados and professionals from around the world, featuring concerts, masterclasses, workshops, exhibitions, and a guitar competition.

Concerts and masterclasses: Evening concerts will feature an opening-night tribute to the music of Spain and Latin America by the young flamenco guitarist Grigory Goryachev and faculty member Adam Holzman, a solo recital by harpsichordist John Gibbons, and an evening of chamber music with Festival artistic director Eliot Fisk and New England Conservatory's own quartet-in-residence, the Borromeo String Quartet.  Adam Holzman, Robert Ward, and Eliot Fisk will also lead masterclasses in classical guitar performance and technique during the Festival. Boston-based guitar-technique guru Dmitri Goryachev will offer special private lessons open to guitarists of all levels who prefer working one-on-one.

In addition to events strictly related to the art of the classical guitar, Boston GuitarFest 2006 aspires to provide a mind-and-spirit-expanding global musical perspective. To this end we will be joined by master of Indian music, Peter Row; oudist Mal Barsamian; and harpsichordist John Gibbons.  Each of these superb artists will not only be heard in recital but will also give a brief workshop aimed at introducing guitarists to their respective musical universes. Christoph Wolff of Harvard University, the world's leading authority on the music of Bach, will also present a lecture on Bach and the lute.

Competition: Registered participants in the guitar masterclasses of the Festival will also be eligible to enter the 2006 International Boston Guitar Competition, which will run concurrently with the Festival.  President of the jury will be Prof. Bruce Holzman of Florida State University at Tallahassee, who will be assisted by an international jury including composer Michael Gandolfi; pianist Veronica Jochum; jazz guitarist David Tronzo of the Berklee College of Music, and Boston- based freelance classical guitarist, Will Riley.

Required pieces for participation in the competition: Preliminary round: Fandanguillo from Suite Castellana, by F. Moreno Torroba.

Note: Due to the intense interest in the Competition and the limited time available for the Preliminary Rounds, the Boston GuitarFest 2006 reserves the right to limit the number of participants in the Competition. Should this situation occur, we will unfortunately be unable to refund Festival fees.

Final round: at least two variations from George Rochberg's Caprice Variations (transcribed for guitar by Eliot Fisk) to be chosen by the competitors from 10-11 variations selected by Mr. Fisk, downloadable from the NEC Summer School Web site (www.newenglandconservatory.edu/summer/forms_registration.html.)
Prizes: First prize: $2500 plus concert; second prize: $1500; third prize: $500; special prize for the best interpretation of Bach: $250; special prize for the best interpretation of  the Rochberg Caprice Variations. (Note: To be eligible for the Boston Guitarfest 2006 Competition, applicants must be 35 or under as of June 7).
