NEC Summer School: Institutes and Intensives

Encountering Music: A Forum for Conductors

Charles Peltz, artistic director
William Drury, coordinator
Faculty: Frank Battisti, Charles Peltz
Sunday, June 22-Thursday, June 26

During an intensive five days, the seven chosen participants will encounter music with Frank Battisti (former NEC Wind Ensemble director; founder, Massachusetts Youth Wind Ensemble and the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles), Charles Peltz (Music Director, NEC Wind Ensemble, Glens Falls Symphony; Director of Orchestras, Luzerne Summer Music Center), and other NEC faculty.

Morning seminars will involve discussion and study of scores, aesthetics and perspectives on music. Afternoon conducting sessions will include conducting a complete ensemble. The overall structure of the week will enable all participants to enjoy the educational benefits of intensive and highly personalized instruction and discussion.

The repertoire to be studied or conducted has included: Mozart Serenades Nos. 10 and 11 ; Hindemith Symphony in B-flat, Persichetti Symphony for Band, and Stravinsky Symphonies of Wind Instruments. Repertoire may be changed with due notice to participants and is tailored to the abilities of each participant in the symposium.

Participants will also submit the titles of six (6) works with which they have had rehearsal or performance experience. One of these works will be chosen, through mutual agreement, for the participant to conduct during the seminar. The seminar also includes sessions introducing new repertoire.
