Institutes | College/Adult Courses | For Young Performers | General Information NEC Summer School: Institutes and IntensivesSummer Intercultural Institute: World Rhythm Boot CampInternalizing Musical Time and Mathematics, Using African and Indian Rhythm Systems, Movement and Recitation Faculty: Jerry Leake, director and drummer In this intensive workshop, rhythm theory and practice merge using a 3-tiered method of reciting African and Indian drum compositions, playing counter stick patterns and applying basic movement to ground one's musical time. Musicians and teachers will find this a useful entry point into African and Indian cultures. Sticks, CDs, and detailed handouts provided for minimal costs. On the final evening of the workshop, students will participate in an informal public performance with faculty and guests in a festive environment of music, dance and food. The classes are demanding, but prior experience with drumming is not expected or required. Now in its 14th year, the New England Conservatory Summer Intercultural Institute offers an intensive immersion emphasizing oral learning through close contact with master performers and scholars, integration of performance with cultural study and a relaxed environment of cross-cultural dialogue. The schedule for these Summer School workshops concentrates class meetings on weekend days and weekday evenings, making them compatible with normal work hours. Participants include college music faculty, K-12 teachers, committed amateurs, professional performers, students of all ages, jazz musicians and composers.
