SICPP 2008: An intensive performance seminar on music of the 20th and 21st centuries for advanced instrumentalists at the college level or higher, providing an opportunity for students, teachers, and performers who are actively involved in new music--or just curious--to gather, connect, and explore new and innovative repertoire. The week-long Institute features piano master classes, chamber music, and composition colloquia. With master classes each morning, afternoons of private lessons and chamber music rehearsals, and six evening concerts, the constant presence of new sounds and living music will be a challenging inspiration throughout the week.

Ensemble Program: Instrumentalists other than pianists and percussionists are invited to apply to the SICPP Ensemble Program. Ten instrumentalists will be selected to prepare and perform contemporary chamber music under the direction of SICPP artistic director Stephen Drury. Musicwill be mailed out in late May; groups formed from the pool of applicants will also include SICPP faculty and members of the Callithumpian Consort, who will direct and coach the ensembles as well as perform in them. All chamber music prepared during the week will be performed at the final Saturday marathon concert. Ensembles will also perform works by invited composers (see Call for Scores). Limit: 15 performing pianists; 10 percussionists; 10 instrumentalists.

Pianists: A limited number of pianists will be coached on a broad range of repertoire from the last 100 years in the regular morning master classes; they will also receive private lessons with either SICPP Artistic Director Stephen Drury or members of the SICPP faculty. They are also invited to take part in the SICPP Ensemble Program.

Percussionists: Percussionist Scott Deal will lead the percussion program with guest faculty member Mathias Reumert, Danish percussionist and winner of the 2007 Gaudeamus Competition. Ten advanced percussionists will be selected to participate in regular morning master classes, ensembles and private lessons, and perform on the Saturday marathon concert.

Vocalists: A select number of vocalists will be invited this year to work with Pamela Wood in exploring the exciting world of 20th and 21st century vocal music. Ms. Wood was one of the vocalists on the original recording of Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians.

Concerts: Five evening concerts will feature performances by the Institute's faculty and guest artists, as well as the Callithumpian Consort. Selected Institute students will perform on the Saturday marathon concert, and all submitted scores accepted to the Composition Workshop will also be performed.

Composition Workshop: New Works-Call for Scores: SICPP is seeking solo piano and small ensemble scores to be performed during the Institute. Scores can encompass all ranges of difficulty, including beginning level. Those selected will be presented by advance students in the seminar, discussed by Composer-in-Residence Jo Kondo, and performed at the Saturday marathon concert. Composers whose pieces are selected are expected to register and attend the Institute for the composers' fee of $425. Please submit scores (with minimal biographical information) to: SICPP Scores, c/o Stephen Drury, New England Conservatory, 290 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02115.
Deadline:
Review of scores begins May 1.

Composer-in-Residence: Jo Kondo's piano and chamber works will be presented in the evening concerts. Participants are encouraged to prepare one of his pieces for Kondo's classes, which will be open to all participants and auditors.

Auditors (non-performing) are welcome in the morning classes and may arrange private lessons with the SICPP faculty at NEC's current studio rate ($94/hour). Composers are also encouraged to audit the course.
