Sound Encounters 2007: A Workshop for Contemporary Music

Michael Norsworthy and Carol Rodland, artistic directors
Kenji Bunch, composer-in-residence
Faculty: Renee Krimsier, flute; Ariadne Daskalakis, violin; Scott Kluksdahl, cello; Max Levinson, piano; Michael Norsworthy, clarinet; Carol Rodland, viola
Wednesday, June 13-Sunday, June 17

Sound Encounters 2007 is an intensive performance workshop exploring 20th and 21st century music. The seminar will open June 13 with a faculty concert featuring the music of Kenji Bunch and works by other prominent living composers. Participants will receive intensive coachings and private lessons with members of the faculty on selected repertoire, culminating in two student concerts on Sunday, June 17.

The repertoire will encompass a broad range of contemporary music, with special emphasis on the works of Kenji Bunch, who will offer a Friday evening lecture in addition to coachings on his music throughout the weekend. Selected students may have the opportunity to premiere some of Bunch's newest works. Suggested works will also be listed on the Institute's website (www.soundencounters.info), but additional suggestions from participants accepted into the workshop are also welcomed.

Instrumentalists: Violinists, violists, cellists, pianists, clarinetists and flutists may apply as individuals or as pre-formed ensembles composed of any combination of the aforementioned instruments. String quartets, woodwind quintets and piano trios are also encouraged to apply.

Composers are invited to apply to Sound Encounters in the "Composer" category and to submit for consideration their own works written for any combination of the instrumentation represented in the Sound Encounters faculty. One of the afternoon group sessions at the workshop will be devoted to a public reading by the faculty and subsequent interactive discussion of the chosen composers' works. A recording of this session will be made available to participating composers (but cannot be used for commercial purposes).

Auditors areencouraged to attend any or all of the workshops, with special encouragement given to composers, who will have an opportunity to share a meal and informal discussion with Kenji Bunch. Auditors may also be performers who only wish to observe and not participate in the workshop. If time permits, auditors may sign up for private lessons with the faculty at NEC's current studio rate of $89 per hour.
