NEC Summer School: Institutes and Intensives

Summer Intercultural Institute I: Unlocking the Art of Flamenco

Jonathan "Juanito" Pascual, director, flamenco guitar
Faculty: Elena Andújar (dance, voice), Gonzalo Grau (percussion)
Sunday, June 24-Satuday, June 30
Sunday, June 24, 2:00 - 10:00 p.m.
Monday June 25- Friday, June 29, 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.
Saturday, June 30, 2:00 - 10:00 pm.

This intensive seven-day workshop will focus on developing familiarity and proficiency in the core flamenco rhythmic/song forms of soleares, siguiriyas, alegrias, bulerias, tangos and rumba. Participants will enter the repertoire through intensive practice of rhythmic clapping (palmas), and singing, which may then be transferred to a student's particular instrument. Some more experienced flamenco dance students may choose to learn and perform choreography in one of the festive rhythmic forms. Daily classes also include instruction in flamenco dancing and an introduction to percussion techiniques. In addition to the hands-on practice of music and dance, a portion of each daily session will focus on aspects of the history and culture of flamenco. Through a combination of lecture, analysis, guided listening/viewing, and performance of the msuci and dance, students will leave this workshop with a broad understanding of the current state of flamenco, its tradition, and its cultural context.including explorations of current developments in flamenco through jazz, contemporary dance and flamenco piano.

On the final evening of the workshop, students will participate in an informal public performance with faculty and guests in a festive environment of music, dance and food.

The classes are demanding, but prior experience with flamenco music and proficiency on an instrument are not expected or required.

Now in its 13th year, the New England Conservatory Summer Intercultural Institute offers an intensive immersion emphasizing oral learning through close contact with master performers and scholars, integration of performance with cultural study and a relaxed environment of cross-cultural dialogue. The schedule for these Summer School workshops concentrates class meetings on weekend days and weekday evenings, making them compatible with normal work hours. Participants include college music faculty, K-12 teachers, committed amateurs, professional performers, students of all ages, jazz musicians and composers.
