Jazz Ensembles and Improvisation Courses

Jazz ensembles are formed at all levels for instrumentalists and vocalists. Emphasis is on exploring different jazz styles and improvisation techniques. Seven two-hour coaching sessions and a concluding concert will be scheduled at the mutual convenience of the participants and the coach.

M-F: 2:30-3:30p.m.
For students under 14 of all musical experiences. Through games and exercises, students learn to improvise and create their own short pieces in a variety of musical vocabularies and traditions. They will develop musical short stories, playlets, poems, solo and group improvisations, and present a concert on the final day of class.Note: participants may register for either or both sessions.

From ornametation, and cadenzas to spontaneous creation, improvisaiton helps up present classical music in the wonder of the here and now. Learn to play the music "behind the notes" by improvising in classical (Mozart, Bach, Beethoven) and other world music vocabularies (including jazz, avant-garde, West African.) Expand your powers of self-expression and musical adventure. Students will celebrate the world of musical creation, while exploring melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and dramatic possibilities in styles of the past and present. In this class, students will learn the skills necessary for solo vocal performance. Sessions will include repertoire, writing lead sheets, talking down a tune, and intros and endings. Prerequisite: Please call the instructor at 617-747-8447 before Monday, June 30 for further information and an audition.
