Vocal Vacation is a cross-cultural summer music choral festival where urban and suburban children gather together for friendship and song. An innovative component of the Kodály Music Institute, this two-week program for children Grades 2-12 provides in-depth artistic experiences. Each student has a daily group music class taught via the Kodály approach, daily chorus practice, and other arts-related activities such as folk dancing, recorder, and visual arts "treks" to local museums. Music classes and chorus are taught by master Kodály educators and are observed by teacher participants attending the Kodály Music Institute as part of their training.
For whom? This exciting program is for children who have strong interest and a solid proficiency in singing skills. The goal is complete immersion in the joy of music making.
The philosophical basis of the Kodály concept is the belief that music is the birthright of every child, and that all children are able to learn to sing in tune through the use of high-quality folk, jazz, and classical music. Training leads to life-long music enjoyment as it develops musicians who sight-sing music and are musical participants throughout their lives.
Everyone a musician comes alive through joyful music making. Please invite your friends, colleagues, and family to attend our Gala Concert. There is no admission charge for this performance, which involves adult and children participants from the Kodály Music Institute and Vocal Vacation.

About our conductors:
Elaine Quilichini, one of North America's premier directors, founded the Calgary Girls Choir in 1995 to provide a unique and creative choral music experience with world-class instruction and performances. Since then the Choir has received international acclaim. Ms. Quilichini also directs the University of Calgary's Women's Choir. She made her debut as maestro at Carnegie Hall in 2003, conducted her choirs at three National Conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, conducted the Texas All State Women's Choir, and was twice the National Conference Choir Director for the Organization of American Kodály Educators. In March she was the key presenter at the OAKE Mini-Conference and Calgary Girls Choir was Choir-in Residence at the OAKE 2008 Conference in Chicago. She was a member of the Alberta Choral Federation's Board of Directors, and a recipient of its 'con spirito' award for her contributions to the choral art. Ms. Quilichini is the Artistic Director of the Nebraska Wesleyan University's Summer Choral Program, and conducted the 2005 Nebraska State High School Honor Choir. She is the conductor of summer programs at the Kodály Music Institute, New England Conservatory in Boston, and at Wichita State University. In 2006 she joined the International Summer Academy of Choral Conducting and Music Pedagogy, Canary Islands. In July she will be a member of the Roundtable for university programs at the Pan Canadian Music Education Think Tank II at Memorial University. In November she will be guest conductor of the International High School Honor Choir in Osaka, Japan, and in 2008, guest lecturer at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. A most rewarding endeavor is commissioning new choral works, her own series being published by Alliance Music Publications.
Jonathan C. Rappaport, past Executive Director of the Conservatory Lab Charter School in Brighton, Massachusetts, is also a faculty member of the New England Conservatory where he Co-Directs the Kodály Music Institute and teaches graduate-level courses in pedagogy, conducting, and solfége. Jonathan is a graduate of the University of Denver's Lamont School of Music (B.M.E), the New England Conservatory (M.M. with honors) and has done Ph.D. studies at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst. He has extensive Kodály training with certificates from the Kodály Musical Training Institute and for a year of study at the Franz Liszt Academy, Budapest. He has served as the choral director of numerous schools, children's festival honor choirs, churches, synagogues, and community choral groups including the Little Singers of Greater Boston and the Broadmoor Chamber Singers (Natick, MA), as well as the Worcester Public Schools All-City Chorus. He is also active as a composer, author and publisher. Mr. Rappaport has received numerous awards for his work in the arts, including the Moss Hart Award (New England Theatre Conference), the Distinguished Service Award (MA Music Educators Association), and the Irene Buck Service to Arts Education Award (MA Alliance for Arts Education).
